I spent several hours trying to get pcntl_fork to work. I've removed it from disabled_functions using custom php.ini, added a custom php.ini for the extension. Nothing worked.
According to: http://www.bohne-lang.de/spec/linux/php_fork/ the function will NOT run if php is running as an Apache module! Run PHP as CGI module instead.
